Griswold Home Care is pleased to announce Jezrahiah Farley as the winner of our most recent bi-annual scholarship. Every semester, Griswold Home Care awards a $1,000 scholarship to outstanding students who have shown a commitment to caring for others and making a difference in their communities. This monetary award is designed to help further the educational goals of these students who put the well-being of others ahead of their own.
Jezrahiah, our most recent scholarship recipient, is currently a student at the California State University Maritime Academy where he is pursuing his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Throughout his academic career, he’s maintained an impressive GPA of 3.76 – 4.0, all while caring for his father and siblings who face significant challenges.
“My dad struggles with asthma, my sister was born deaf, and my little brother was born with Down Syndrome. It may seem daunting that all these conditions or disabilities have a tremendous effect on my loved ones, but that’s not the way I see it.,” explained Jezrahiah.
“The greatest reward is teaching my little brother how to put on his clothes despite the long hours it takes for him to slowly button his shirt, the hours I spend signing to my deaf sister and helping her through the struggles of being alone in a hearing world, and being there for my dad when he lies in a hospital with a breathing mask. The greatest reward is being that pillar of strength.”
Rising Above Challenges
A young man of resilient character, Jezrahiah’s positive outlook and drive to learn more to better the lives of others around him has propelled him forward in life and in his career goals. Prior to entering college, Jezrahiah had a challenging one-year internship as a teaching assistant and supervisor at a private academy. The experience provided him with an opportunity to work with young people, taking take a personalized approach to reaching them depending on their own needs.
Jezrahiah’s experience as a caregiver to his family and as a teaching assistant for students in his city inform his career goals as a mechanical engineer and overall awareness of how everything in our world connects: “The underlying spirit of engineering is the purposeful drive to create and breathe life into the creations of man, to understand and utilize the forces of nature and its resources. Most importantly, engineering is a form of servitude to our civilization who returns the favor by trusting the engineering professionals to maintain safety on a planet that deteriorates naturally.”
Griswold Home Care is honored to extend a scholarship to Jezrahiah as he continues along his journey as a student and as a person dedicated to the care of those around him.
Jezrahiah acknowledged that “sometimes it can be disheartening seeing the challenges my family faces, but I see it as an opportunity to grow stronger as a family unit. As an able-bodied person with all my faculties, a challenge is being optimistic for them and with them in the face if their struggles. A smile can take anyone a hundred miles. A prayer of hope and acknowledging all the good things we had never hurt anyone, either.”
