Griswold Home Care is honored to announce the winner of our bi-annual scholarship contest. Twice each year, Griswold Home Care extends a $1,000 scholarship to an outstanding student who is pursuing a career in the caregiving field. To qualify, participants were encouraged to tell us about the personal challenges and rewards they encountered in caring for others. Scholarship participants also discussed how achieving a higher education would allow them to create a greater, more positive impact in their community.
We are pleased to award a $1,000 scholarship to Laykin Forthun, a University of Florida student working towards her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing. In addition to juggling a full course load and maintaining a GPA above 3.76, Laykin has taken on caring for a loved one who was diagnosed with severe clinical depression.
Laykin was able to effectively manage her time, studies, and household duties while accepting the challenges of looking after a loved one in need of care. Laykin noted that, “The typical human response to emotional hardship is to shut down and take time off. I was able to shake this response and respond in a way that provided the maximum benefit to everyone involved in the situation, including myself. This experience helped me to grow as a person and become stronger, and caused me to develop a passion for providing service to those in need.”
Upon her graduation from the University of Florida, Laykin plans to become a nurse in the hopes that her experiences can help others heal more peacefully. “Often times sickness causes one to feel alone and afraid, but through the service I provide I will be able to assist others in feeling safe and cared for.”
“When caring for and supporting a loved one, it is important to remember that they are human. Everyone goes through periods where they need the care and support of others, and it is important to focus on them and their feelings and to take the good out of every situation rather than feeling pity towards them or yourself,” said Laykin about her caregiving experience. “Each life is valuable, and everyone is worth caring for.”
Congratulations, Laykin! Griswold Home Care wishes you all the best in your continued path as a caregiver and much happiness and success along the way.
