May Is Women’s Health Month

Image of senior woman exercising by running.As we celebrate Women’s Health Month in May, now is a great time for women everywhere – particularly seniors – to take stock of themselves and make sure they’re doing all they can to maintain good physical and mental health. If you know that your health isn’t all it should be, it’s not too late to make some changes that will help you lead a happier and healthier life. And you don’t have to wait until January to get started!

Follow these simple tips for healthy aging shared by Griswold Home Care of Wheat Ridge, your leader in in-home care services.

  • Focus on a healthy, balanced diet. In a world where we’re surrounded by fast food and pre-packed convenience foods, making healthy food choices isn’t easy. It is possible, however! Just make sure your kitchen is stocked with plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean meats and dairy and healthy fats. Limit carb-, sugar- and sodium-heavy foods, drink plenty of water and practice safe food handling to prevent food poisoning and foodborne illnesses.
  • Manage medical conditions. As women age, they become more susceptible to certain health problems, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and osteoporosis. It’s extremely important to work closely with medical professionals in order to keep these conditions under control. This includes taking any prescribed medication regularly, following diet recommendations and keeping all of your scheduled appointments.
  • Attend health screenings. The early diagnosis and treatment of cancer and other diseases can mean the difference between life and death, which is why it’s crucial to be regularly screened for certain health conditions, as directed by your physician. This can include getting a mammogram or pap smear and being screened for colon cancer – which affects women as well as men!
  • Stay active. The longer you’re able to stay active in your later years, the stronger and healthier you will be, both mentally and physically. Keep in mind that staying active doesn’t necessarily mean you have to spend hours working out at the gym. Instead, find a physical activity that you enjoy, such as walking, swimming or gardening, and stick with it. If you’re not sure what would be appropriate for your age and physical condition, ask your doctor for recommendations for safe activities that would work for you.
