With the spring approaching, seniors will want to enjoy the great outdoors. A clean and beautiful yard will do wonders to boost mood and ensure they will want to get some exercise in the privacy of their own property. However, making sure one’s yard is up to desired standards takes a little work and possibly some help from loved ones and hired services. In this post, we will take a look at how to provide help for seniors with yard work.

Senior Yard Work Checklist

Keeping a yard neat and tidy can be challenging for seniors to do on their own and oftentimes, they will need assistance from loved ones. Here are a few ways family members and friends can provide yard work help for seniors:

  • Remove tripping hazards by storing hoses, gardening tools, and other items. Add extra soil or pave stepping stones to uneven areas to further prevent falls.

  • Remove and prevent pests by adding pest repellent torches near seating areas and keep wasp killing sprays nearby if needed.

  • Take care of wandering risks by equipping your loved one with GPS wristbands or shoes that send alerts if they move outside of a specific area. Additionally, make sure the yard has ample lighting with bright porch lights and solar lights along walkways.

  • Address water damage concerns by turning off outdoor water, draining sprinkler systems and outdoor spigots, and clearing out gutters.

  • Check that sheds and housing areas are safe by inspecting the roof, window seals, and door seals.

  • Make cosmetic changes to the yard by raking leaves, pruning plants, and other beautification strategies.

  • Protect the grass and plants by using fertilizer and mulch to prevent them from freezing.

Finding Outside Help

If elderly yard work help from family and friends is not an option, then hiring outside help, such as a lawn service, can be a viable option. Here are a few things you should do before taking the plunge:

  • Measure the square footage of your lawn to help determine price.

  • Figure out the equipment you will need such as yard tools and lawnmowers.

  • Figure out the treatments you will need such as testing and fertilizer.

  • Determine costs of tools such as lawnmowers, weed-whackers, and other essentials.

Finding Senior Citizen Yard Work Help

There are a number of online services to find yard services for seniors. Here are a few places where you can find the proper assistance:

  • Angi: Entirely devoted to the service industry, this site lets you book assistance in an instant. You can also look at ratings and reviews from individuals who have used the services before to help you make your choice.

  • HomeAdvisor: Find trusted local pros for any home project. Just type in your zip code and find the quote that works for you.

  • TruGreen: Calling itself “The Official Sponsor of Spring,” TruGreen offers three different kinds of treatment at different prices. Choose the best one to fit your needs.

  • Yelp: With this well-known site, you can connect to local services and, much like Angi, you can read reviews from others to help make your decision.
