Now that the weather is going to be improving and it will start warming up, it’s a good time for seniors to once again think about their skincare and how to protect their skin from the sun. Seniors need to spend time outdoors to get the many physical and mental health benefits that come from being outdoors, but seniors also need to be sure that they are protecting their skin as much as possible. As seniors get older their skin becomes thinner and more susceptible to damage from the sun. That’s why skincare has to be a priority for seniors. Personal care at home helps seniors bathe, moisturize their skin, and take steps to protect their skin like:

Wear A Hat

When seniors are going outdoors in the sun they should always wear a hat with a brim or a visor that has a brim. Visors are a good option for seniors that don’t want to wear full hats because they want to let the breeze blow through their hair to help keep them from getting sweaty. Wearing a hat or a visor with a brim and sunglasses are essential for keeping seniors from getting too much sun exposure, especially during the hottest parts of the summer.

Always Wear Sunscreen

Sunscreen is one of those things that seniors should just get used to putting on daily like deodorant. Sunscreen is necessary in every season of the year to protect the delicate skin seniors have form UV rays. Seniors should be wearing a high quality sunscreen that has an SPF of at least 30 percent, although 50 percent or higher would be best. And seniors should be reapplying their sunscreen throughout the day because it will wear off during the day. When seniors are exercising or swimming they may need to reapply their sunscreen at least once an hour.

Keep Skin Covered

Seniors should keep their skin covered when they’re outdoors in the spring and summer. That can be difficult when the temperatures soar, but there are ways that seniors can stay cool while staying covered to protect their skin from the skin. Wearing light layers of natural breathable fabrics like linen or cotton is a smart way that seniors can protect themselves from the sun without getting too warm.

Avoid Going Out During The Hottest Part Of The Day

The sun’s rays are strongest from about 1PM to about 4PM, so seniors should avoid going outdoors during those hours if they can. When the sun is the strongest the temperatures will be the hottest and the damage done by the sun will be at maximum strength so staying indoors is the best way for seniors to protect themselves. Especially in the summer when the temperatures are soaring it’s important for seniors to stay indoors during the hottest part of the day. Seniors can enjoy outdoor activities either early in the morning or at night when the temperature is cooler and the sun’s rays are not as powerful.
