How Can You Feel More Empowered as a Family Caregiver?

Empowerment can help you get through quite a bit when you’re a family caregiver. If you’re not feeling that you have the power that you need, you’ll need to determine what changes you can make to regain that feeling.

Acknowledge that You’ve Made a Choice

Even if it feels like you haven’t made a choice, you really have. You can always pass off your caregiving duties to someone else, even if you wouldn’t feel right doing that. So accepting that there is a level of choice involved in caregiving can help you to feel a little bit more in control of your destiny as a family caregiver.

Let Go of What You Can’t Control

Everyone has portions of their lives and of their individual situations that they can’t control. If you spend time and energy fretting about the things you can’t control, you’re going to be worn out when it comes to the things you can control. Start acknowledging that you simply can’t control certain situations, let them go, and focus on what you can actually do something about. You’ll be amazed how much more energy you can devote to your life.

Remember that You’re Making a Difference

It can be difficult to remember that you are making a big difference in your elderly loved one’s life while you’re in the trenches, but you really are. Keeping your elderly loved one safe and comfortable while seeing to her daily needs as well as you can is extremely important work. You may not get the appreciation that you want from your elderly loved one or from other family members, but you can’t let that discourage you.

Look for Happiness from Within

While you’re reminding yourself that you’re making a true difference, keep in mind that you have to find happiness and accolades within yourself. If you’re waiting for other people to appreciate you and give you the kudos that you’ve earned, you’re probably going to be waiting a while, unfortunately. You’ll need to find ways to give yourself what you need in terms of recognition.

As you start to allow yourself to feel more empowered, you’re going to become more used to how it feels to you.
