Fall is many people’s favorite season – and for good reason. It’s an especially delightful time of the year for individuals in the Northeast and especially seniors – the days aren’t blazing hot; you can take in the cool crisp fresh air. Not to mention, the orange, red, and yellow color palette that the changing trees treat us all to.

If you’re a senior, the family member of a senior, or you work as a caregiver for a senior, then you might be wondering what outdoor activities are best during the Fall season. With comfortable weather, there are plenty of things home caregivers can do with seniors – many of them right in communities in the Metrowest-Boston area, including in the towns of Needham, Natick, and Framingham. Some of these activities can even be enjoyed from home for those senior loved ones who might be unable to get out of the house.

The Griswold Home Care Metrowest-Boston office is active in the communities we serve. We have strong relationships with local senior centers and businesses so we can offer greater fulfillment to those we serve throughout the entire year. Here are a few of our caregivers’ favorite fall activities to do with seniors in Metrowest-Boston.

Take in all the beautiful colors:

In the fall, no matter where you look, it can feel like Mother Nature is putting on a show. The leaves are spectacular and vibrant with the most amazing colors. They can be enjoyed on short walks or drives and even from looking out the window. Senior caregivers often use the beautiful scenery at places like Cochituate State Park in Natick or Cushing Memorial Park in Framingham as a way to motivate seniors to get out of the house and enjoy some time outdoors.

Visit a pumpkin patch:

Heading to a local pumpkin patch and finding just the right pumpkin can be a fun activity. Once your senior has found a pumpkin they like, carving it for Halloween can make a great festive decoration that they can enjoy from their home. The Carter Memorial United Methodist Church in Needham and Hanson’s Farm in Framingham both have pumpkin patches that are wonderful to visit at this time of year. Hanson’s Farm also has cider donuts, a corn maze and haunted hayrides to make it a fun destination for the entire family.

Pick some apples:

Who doesn’t love apples? Fortunately, fall is apple-picking season and there is no shortage of orchards to pick from. Many locations also have plenty of fun activities for seniors to enjoy with an elder caregiver such as barnyard animals, hayrides – and don’t forget cider donuts. This can also be a fun activity to do with the entire family. The Belkin Family Lookout Farm in Natick or Newton Community Farm in Newton Centre are both great places for apple picking in the Metrowest-Boston area.
