What Kinds of Housekeeping Activities Can You Take Over for Your Elderly Loved One?

Caregivers in Sudbury MA

One of the first set of tasks you might find yourself handling for your elderly loved one as her family caregiver may well involve housekeeping activities. These are an easy way for you to show your loved one that you care about her and that you want to help her.

Yard Management

Often the yard is one of the first bits of housekeeping that can fall away for your elderly loved one. It can take a lot of time and stamina to properly take care of a yard and your loved one may not be up for it. If you can handle the physical work on your own, you might find it rewarding to be able to handle this for your loved one. Otherwise, you can manage finding someone who can take over the physical work while you oversee the situation for your loved one.

General Housekeeping

Dusting, vacuuming, mopping, and other general housekeeping tasks aren’t necessarily difficult, but if your loved one can’t keep up with them as well as she’d like, they build up. Ask your loved one if there’s something that she would like to handle herself. For example, some loved ones like to continue to dust so that they are the ones caring for their own tchotchkes and knick-knacks. All of the other tasks, however, are simply too labor intensive for her. Again, this is something you might be able to do on your own or you might consider hiring someone to help out.

Grocery Shopping and Cooking

Grocery shopping and cooking are tremendously important for your elderly loved one’s health because she needs nutritious meals on a daily basis. Some elderly loved ones no longer drive or don’t want to deal with the hassle of grocery shopping and cooking. Take over these tasks for her and work with her doctor to come up with a way of eating that helps her to feel her healthiest.

Laundry and Clothing Management

Laundry is one of those tasks that never seems to end and if your loved one isn’t able to keep up with the task, she may start to ignore it. If you can do a load or two of laundry for her when you stop by, however, that takes the pressure off of her.

Reassess your loved one’s needs periodically. She may want to take some tasks back or have you take over more of her housekeeping tasks as they become too much for her.
