Cheeseball

When Food Becomes "Famous"

Like many people, I associate memories with food. Put a chocolate Whoopie Pie in front of me and I’m transported back to visits with my grandparents and my grandmother’s amazing baking skills. But nothing quite compares to the notoriety that belongs to my mother’s cheeseball.

Ever since I can remember, every major holiday has included that cheeseball – a savory blend of two cheeses, onion, Worcestershire sauce (does anyone really know how to pronounce that?), and walnuts. It is best enjoyed on a buttery cracker or even with celery (if you’re trying to be good!). And if you really want to get fancy, you can try spreading it in a dish and baking it into a delicious bubbly warm cheese dip.

My sisters and I loved this cheeseball so much that mom even sent us home from holidays with a cheeseball to enjoy with our friends. It became so legendary that my friends refer to it as The “Famous” Chris White (that’s my mom!) Cheeseball. And when something is this good, it definitely has to be shared. Enjoy!

The “Famous” Chris White Cheeseball

1-8 oz. package of cream cheese

½ - ¾ lb. grated sharp cheddar cheese (we usually use the orange cheddar)

1 medium onion grated or diced fine

1-3 large dashes of Worcestershire sauce

Salt and pepper to taste

2-3 tablespoons of milk (to desired consistency to hold everything together)

Mix well and roll in crushed nuts (for those with an allergy, you can just roll into a ball and leave out the nuts). Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to serve.

Expert Note: Make a day ahead and refrigerate for better flavor.
