Top 4 Easy-Grow Vegetables for Container Gardens

There are many people who would love to enjoy the benefits of fresh vegetables straight from their own garden, but have one problem: a small yard, or no yard at all. Fortunately, there are quite a few vegetables that grow well in containers that can easily be grouped together on a balcony or small patio. Here are a few of the most popular options.

Tomatoes

There’s nothing quite like a ripe, juicy tomato picked right off the vine. When growing tomatoes in containers, be sure to use a big pot and fill it with plenty of nutrient-rich soil. Make sure the plants get a lot of sunlight and are watered consistently, and you’ll soon be enjoying the satisfying flavor of a homegrown tomato. Keep in mind that the heavy fruit can weigh down the plants and break the stems, so they’ll require strong stakes to keep them upright and possibly a trellis or piece of fencing to provide additional support.

Peppers

Green peppers, sweet peppers and chilies all grow well in pots, and also add beautiful color to your garden space. While they do best in grow boxes, they can also thrive when planted in large containers and placed in a warm, sunny spot. With the right soil, good drainage and frequent watering, pepper plants can grow to be great producers.

Lettuce & Spinach

Lettuce, spinach and other salad greens are extremely easy to grow from seeds, and don’t require as much sun as other plant varieties. They flourish in cooler weather, which means they’ll do best when planted as a fall crop after soil temperatures have dropped. These plants have shallow roots, so choose a container that’s wider than it is deep and always keep the soil moist.

Cucumbers

Cucumbers are also a popular vegetable that can be grown in pots. They’re heavy feeders and thus require plenty of nutrients, as well as regular watering. Cucumbers are prolific growers, so choose a heavy medium- to large-sized pot with strong stakes and a trellis system on which the vines can be trained to grow up instead of out.
