Understanding Veteran Benefits

In our work with families, we have found a lot of misunderstandings and confusion around veteran benefits that can help cover home care costs, home modifications and more.

In many cases we have found that families do not even know that there are veteran benefits that can cover such costs. There are!

Several families have also assumed that their veteran parent or spouse did not qualify for one veteran benefit because they were told they did not qualify for a different benefit. The qualifications are different for different benefits, such as pension, education, aid and attendance, and community care benefits. The differences can be confusing.

That is why we are excited that the May program of ACAP Cape Fear (Adult Children of Aging Parents) will address veteran benefits. We appreciate the service of our veterans and want veterans and their families to have access to these programs created to help care for the needs of our veterans as they age.

The program will be held May 9, 2023 from 6:00 to 7:30 pm at First Baptist Church Activities Center,
1939 Independence Blvd, Wilmington, NC. Betsy Graham, Veterans Services Officer with New Hanover County Veterans Services will be presenting and a light dinner will be provided by Amedisys Hospice.

While ACAP programs are geared toward the adult children, they are appropriate for anyone interested in education and resources on aging-related topics, whether for themselves, a loved one, or even as a professional in our community.
